How we can unlock the potential of young people through voluntary service.
We're proud to be a partner of City Year US since 2002 and a founding partner of City Year UK
On Thursday 19 June, City Year published a book about unlocking young people’s potential, and harnessing their talent to create a real step change.
Steve Holliday, Chief Executive, contributed to the story, exploring how programmes like City Year offer a quantifiable payback to business and society by tapping “the richest talent pool going”. We’re proud to be a partner of City Year US since 2002 and a founding partner of City Year UK . City Year UK also help us deliver our School Power programme through the London Power Tunnels project, where our first National Grid City Year UK team leader Rodney Williams now works.
Watch City Year’s new film to hear more from Rodney on how our partnership supported him discover his strengths and passion.
City Year was founded by two Harvard graduates on the belief that young people can change the world – all they need is the opportunity to serve. Shortly after President Clinton was elected, he worked with Congress to create a programme to provide grants to programmes like City Year, offering young people a small living stipend to volunteer a year of their time to “getting things done.” Since the founding of Americorps, more than 830,000 people have delivered a year of service to their community and this has been possible through the ongoing support from the White House.
City Year UK are driving forward the fundamental benefit a year of service brings to not only to our future generation, but also to our communities and businesses. Citizen Power is a platform to raise awareness of the need to make a year of service common parlance in the UK and to have political support regardless of who is in Government. We were honoured to contribute an essay on the considerable payback long term social action programmes bring to business.
