Hall systems go!
Hall systems go!

National Grid is set to leave a lasting legacy in a Gloucestershire village where it operates by donating £20,000 to jumpstart the construction of a new village hall.

Bringing Energy to Life sees National Grid support projects which benefit the communities in areas where it works.

“We hope that with this £20,000, the village will soon boast a new multi-purpose venue for all to enjoy.”

David Kerr, National Grid.

Wormington Village Society will receive the donation from a community grant called Bringing Energy to Life (BETL). The scheme sees National Grid support projects which benefit the communities in areas where it works.

Wormington is home to a National Grid compressor station and the company has worked hard to forge strong relationships with residents and the local parish council. Work carried out in response to community concerns has included:

– Replacing road lighting for LEDs to eliminate glare over the site
– Planting 40 trees to screen the site from the village, with more than 5,000 in total planted over the past 10 years
– Carrying out sound-deadening work on site equipment to the value of more than £100,000
– Working with the local wildlife trust to promote biodiversity on site, giving plant-life a boost and improving the local area.

Strengthening the community

As for the new hall, it will become the village’s main artery for social and sport events, education classes and community get-togethers, serving all ages and strengthening community cohesion. This is particularly important in a village as isolated as Wormington, with its population of 160 people and just one bus service a week connecting it to surrounding areas.

David Kerr from National Grid said: “We take our responsibility to Wormington really seriously and the BETL grant will help us further cement our strong relations with the community and ensure our presence has a positive impact. We’re delighted to support them with this £20,000 grant and we hope that the village will soon boast a new multi-purpose venue for all to enjoy.”

Maggie Campbell from Wormington Village Society said: “National Grid’s input is tremendously helpful and very welcome; the funds will go a long way to ensuring the success of the village hall.”
